Antena Aire (formerly called Antena) was a language justice and language experimentation collaborative by Jen/Eleana Hofer and JD Pluecker, both of whom are writers, artists, literary translators, bookmakers and activist interpreters. From 2010-2020, Antena Aire used on-the-ground practices building equitable communication as a generative strategies for making artistic works.
Antena Aire viewed its aesthetic practice as part and parcel of its language justice work. Antena Aire activated links between social justice work and artistic practice by exploring how critical views on language can help us to reimagine and rearticulate the worlds we inhabit.
Antena Aire did language justice work, translation and writing projects, installations in public space and in conjunction with institutions, as well as experiments with performance. Antena Aire was a vehicle that grew and changed over the decade of its existence from 2010-2020.
Antena Aire was just one Antena out of three distinct collectives. At a local level, Antena Houston and Antena Los Ángeles promoted language justice by working with organizations, communities, and individuals to create dynamic, well-functioning multilingual spaces for small and large groups of people to foster open communication and attentive listening across languages and cultures. The local collectives primarily worked with Spanish and English but have experience coordinating, interpreting, and building curriculum around more diverse language combinations. From 2014-2021, Antena Los Ángeles worked with a specific focus on building multilingual spaces in Southern California. From 2015-2020, Antena Houston did the same work in the Bayou City.
