New Señal Chapbooks for 2019!

These gorgeous 2019 Señal chapbooks are out in the world! Señal is a chapbook series for contemporary Latin American poetry in multilingual editions. Antena Aire works on the editorial board for the series, along with Mónica de la Torre, Silvina López Medin, Brenda Lozano, Rebekah Smith, and Matvei Yankelevich. You can purchase copies and support the work here at the Ugly Duckling Presse website for the Señal series.

The first book is New Moon/Luna Nueva/Yuninal Jme’tik, a trilingual edition by Chiapas-based Tzeltal writer Enriqueta Lunez and translated into English by Claire Sullivan. “The book itself is a spell, against what binds her to tradition, against what she loses by distancing herself.” More info and purchase here.

Cowboy & Other Poems by Mexico City writer Alejandro Albarrán Polanco & translated by Rachel Galvin has been called, by Luis Felipe Fabre, “a raucous outburst that opposes a poetry of silence—an aseptic, apolitical, ‘pure’ poetry—with the noise of the world.” More info and purchase here.

Andean Nuclear Spring by Ecuadorian Agustín Guambo & translated by Carlos Moreno is set in the heart of the post-apocalypse in Quito where disparate voices speak: from native Quechua to punk songs in a reality populated by plain landscapes, dreams, rhinoceri, the changing direction of wind, ashes and chants passed into the future from one generation to the next. These voices carry parts of a story whose narration describes a moment near us but not quite where we are, mapping, where destruction burrowed its way into our societies. More info and purchase here.
Ugly Duckling Presse did such beautiful design work this year (& has done so every year) for Señal. So much work went into these books, which try to trouble our ideas about Latin Americanness, latinidad, poetry, monolingualism, language dominance, etc. These poems span a diverse array of languages, cultural groundings, imaginative adventures. Check them out!
